Egdon Heath Harriers offers a variety of different types of training throughout the year, designed to cater for all types abilities of runner.
Couch 2 5k
If you are new to running, then we run several very successful Couch-2-5k programmes each year. These groups normally take place over a period of 9 weeks, where you can graduate at Weymouth parkrun, often with the support of many of our regular parkrunners. The sessions start from Weymouth College Community Gym on a Tuesday evening, leaving at 6.45pm. Registrations is advised to avoid disappointment as places are limited. The programme is run by two of our UK Athletics affiliated run leaders (LiRF), Bev and Mon.
Run Easy (currently postponed while we look for a new group leader)
The next step on from Couch 2 5k, the weekly Thursday night Run Easy group will help nurture your recently gained running skills, helping you progress injury free in a low pressure and fun environment. The group is led by Mon and Ken, and is an ideal stepping stone to building stamina and confidence in yourself to run and achieve your goals, as well for runners coming back from injury and are looking for a steady run.
Summer Pub Runs
The Summer Pub runs take place on Tuesday evening and benefit from the lighter evenings. A list of Pubs is published and at least 3 routes (distances) will be available. The distances generally range from about 5-6miles to approximately 10 miles. The objective is to be back in time for an optional bite to eat in the pub before heading home. We do encourage club members to take the lead and plan the routes - you get back what you put in!
Summer Speed work
Thursday night during the summer sees Bruce leading the way with a series of sessions at the Park'n'Ride carpark in Weymouth, and Darren leading similar sessions in Dorchester at the Great Field. Again all abilities of runner are catered for. The season often starts and ends with a Bleep Test, so you can see how much you have improved over the summer.
Summer Training
If you can't make the summer pub runs, then we have a number of groups which covers all abilities, starting from the Council Offices/North Quay carpark which offers free parking from 1800 on Tuesday evenings. Fast, slow and injury recovering runners are all welcomed by the ever motivational Ian. Whilst the group can be very much mixed ability, everyone gets as much as a workout as they want, distances run are normally under 5 miles, often with a some walking/recovery time and group/team exercises. Each week is different, but always fun! In addition a longer distance group will be present covering around 9-10 miles, normally lead by Bruce.
Winter Training
During the winter (darker months), we leave the pubs of the summer behind and all gather at Weymouth College Community Gym. Runs start at 7.00pm, and we normally split into 3 groups. A warm-up run to a our chosen training activity of the night (Fartleks, relays, 2 forward-1 back, hill reps, follow-the-leader, etc) after that the 3 groups then split off, normally lead by Les, Richard and Brian/Bruce. The faster groups will run a bit further, but the general objective is that no one is ever left behind, so the faster runners in each group will loop back and run in with the slower ones - no long rests for the speedy runners!
Run and Talk
We are commited to the EA's Run and Talk programme, and our first Tuesday event of each month is dedicated as such. Special events are listed on our run and talk page. #runandtalk
We would encourage anyone who is thinking about joining the club to run with us a few times first. We don't charge to run at our training sessions, and have one of the lowest EA membership rates in the UK (renewed annually in January).
